09 Letter of the week
While Berlin is covered in a heat wave I am pondering this beautiful quote by the female Victorian novelist Mary Ann Evans:
It will never rain roses: when we want to have more roses, we must plant more roses
I arrived two years ago in the european capital of insomnia. Shockingly, I found that depth was hard to come by talking to cosmopolitan dancers in the wee small hours of Panorama Bar. No one would commit to anything. Being late was worn like a batch of honor.
I wasn't feeling it.
It dawned on me, that to feel really at home I would have to plant seeds. And that this would take some time. Here are the stories and thought models, that helped me to plant the seeds to feeling chez moi.
I love the image of being a gardener of one’s life:
A gardener knows the seasons, knows the plants. A gardener also knows outcomes are always different from what you anticipate. The serendipity of the wind. Animals. The changing climate. All this is not up to us.
Inspired by gardening, of which i know nothing of, and Munger’s wisdom two thought models I personally visit when taking decisions:
In the words of somber voiced singer Tom Waits: "Luck is when opportunity meets with preparation."
This is to gardening, to cool female poets that ran out of fashion and to my musing about topics I frankly haven’t figured out myself.
Wishing you a great sunny week,
